When buying a new car, do you just ask the car salesman to see the dealer's factory invoice or is there a trick to getting it?

There is no trick to it. If you are buying an American car, then the dealership will likely show you their factory invoice if you ask during the negotiations or sale. Some dealerships will even show it to you without you asking. Foreign vehicle dealerships, on the other hand, are sometimes a bit more reluctant to show their invoices. (This has to do with the culture of the auto industry.) Nonetheless, ask to see their factory invoice for the vehicle you are buying - at the time you are negotiating or making the sale - and they should show it to you.

NOTE: Dealerships will probably not show you their factory invoices if you are merely browsing, "shopping around" or test driving. Invoices are usually only revealed during the negotiations or actual purchase.
